Artist Statement

When people think of books, they think about a book's essential message.  I think books possess qualities beyond their text.  A beautifully bound book, even if it's old and worn, can be an artistic object by itself. My recent work explores books as images or parts of a graphic composition.

In addition there is something wonderful about a library or a reading room, that can calm and quiet a busy life.  So I paint these spaces to invite balance into my life.  I find that my painting can also take me beyond the walls of the gallery and into the community. Not only has my work permitted a wonderful exchange of ideas with the viewer but it has also become a tool to promote literacy.  It is now what moves me forward and shapes my art.

“For books are more than books, they are the life, the very heart and core of ages past, the reason why men worked and died, the essence and quintessence of their lives.”                                                                                                                                 Cicero
