My recent work pays homage to women writers that have made significant progress towards equality with their words. Their books still have the power to educate, inform and motivate women today. Reading, like viewing art, allows us a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In some small way, I hope to put you in the writer’s shoes through my art. We owe a great debt to these women for moving us forward. With all that said, there still is work to do.
I paint primarily with oil on wood panel. My work utilizes books as the subject matter, paying close attention to composition and natural light. I have always thought that books possess qualities beyond their text. A beautifully bound book, even if it's old and worn, can be an art object by itself. This exploration leads me beyond the walls of the gallery and into the community. I have found not only has my work permitted a wonderful exchange of ideas with the viewer but it has also become a tool to promote literacy. It is now what moves me forward and shapes my art.
"The book to read is not the one that thinks for you but the one which makes you think."
